When neighbors come together to support their community, the impact can last for generations. Since 1988, the York County Community Foundation has served as a trusted partner for local philanthropy, bringing donors, nonprofits and community leaders together to address York County’s greatest opportunities and challenges. We spoke with Amy Hagner, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Advisors, about the importance of local giving and why investing in a community foundation helps strengthen York County today and for years to come.

How long have you lived in York County and what makes it special to you?

I have lived in York County for 33 years and have had the opportunity to build my career and serve my community here. What makes York County special is its people. Whether it’s supporting our schools, nonprofit organizations, local businesses or community events, people in York County consistently step forward to make a difference. It’s a place where residents care deeply about the future and are willing to invest their time, talent and resources to strengthen the community for others.

Why is philanthropy important to you personally?

Philanthropy is important to me because it creates opportunities and improves lives. I believe we all have a responsibility to contribute to the communities that have given us so much. Some of the most meaningful changes in a community happen when individuals come together around a shared vision and commit to making life better for future generations.

What first inspired you to become involved with the York County Community Foundation?

I was inspired to become involved with the York County Community Foundation because of its commitment to building long-term resources that strengthen our community for generations to come. The Foundation brings together people who care deeply about York County and connects charitable giving with meaningful community needs. I was particularly drawn to its ability to support a wide range of causes and create lasting impact beyond any single organization or initiative. Being part of an organization that helps shape a stronger future for York County is both rewarding and motivating.

What motivated you to make a charitable gift through the Foundation rather than directly to a specific organization?

While I strongly support many individual organizations, the Foundation offers something unique. It provides a way to invest in the long-term health and future of the entire county. Through the Foundation, charitable gifts can grow over time and respond to changing community needs for generations to come. Donors can support a broad vision for York County, knowing that their contributions will continue to have an impact long after the initial gift is made. That long-term perspective is incredibly meaningful to me.

What does a thriving York County community look like in your eyes?

I see a thriving York County as a community that is prepared not only to meet today’s needs but also to seize tomorrow’s opportunities. It is a county with strong schools, growing businesses, healthy families and nonprofit organizations that have the resources to make a meaningful impact. Most importantly, it is a community where people are willing to invest in its future. That’s why the work of the York County Community Foundation is so important.
