Ask the Expert: How to Give with Purpose
Dear FFTC Team,
I want to make a meaningful impact with my giving but don’t know where to start. How do I figure out what matters to me, choose the right charities and ensure I’m giving in the best way possible?
— Inspired to Give
Dear Inspired,
Thank you for your thoughtful question — and for your desire to give with intention. At Foundation For The Carolinas, we work every day with individuals and families who, like you, want their charitable contributions to reflect their values and create lasting change.
There’s no one “right” way to give, but there are thoughtful steps you can take to clarify your priorities, make strategic decisions and build a fulfilling giving journey.
Many donors begin their journey with what we call values mapping — an exercise in identifying what truly drives your desire to give. While this might sound complex, it often starts with a conversation.
At FFTC, we meet with donors to understand where they’ve given in the past, what causes resonate today and whether they want to focus on specific populations or regions. We also explore how philanthropy fits into their family values — particularly across generations.
Some individuals prefer to develop a personal or family mission statement to guide their giving. Others identify broader interest areas like education, health, or housing. Both approaches are valid. What’s important is carving out time to reflect, either independently or with your family. For those seeking structure, our Strategic Giving Guide offers helpful prompts to uncover your beliefs, interests and aspirations.
Once you’ve identified your “why,” the next step is selecting the “who.”
Beyond online tools, we recommend building real relationships with organizations you’re considering. As your community foundation, FFTC offers a unique advantage: We’re in regular contact with hundreds of nonprofits across the region and beyond. We convene meetings with nonprofits to share updates, conduct site visits and maintain a deep understanding of community needs. We often play matchmaker between donors and nonprofits, helping both sides form strong, trusting relationships.
When it comes to structuring your gifts, there’s no one-size-fits-all. Some prefer annual giving, while others build a legacy through planned gifts or endowments. Donor advised funds are a flexible and accessible way to give strategically over time — and can be a great alternative to private foundations.
Finally, stay involved. Check in with the nonprofits you support, volunteer if you’re able and revisit your goals regularly. Giving is a journey, and we’re honored to walk alongside you.
